3 Critical Questions

There is a vast difference in the effectiveness of magnet therapy products. The number of magnets, the polarity facing the body and the gauss rating of the magnets - all determine the effectiveness of the magnetic therapy product. So before buying a magnet therapy product, examine the effectiveness and quality of the product by asking the following questions:

1. How many Magnets and how much Gauss Power PER MAGNET does the Product contain?

Magnets must produce a magnetic field of sufficient strength. Many products on the market use magnets that are not strong enough to provide any real benefit. A minimum of 500 Gauss is recommended for therapeutical use, 1,000 to 2,500 Gauss have proven most efficient. Make sure the Gauss rating declared does not refer to the sum of the Gauss rating of all magnets. The overall power does not add up but only increases by 30%, so 6 Magnets with 500 Gauss do NOT equal 3,000 Gauss! So the correct declaration of power is a Gauss rating for EACH magnet.

2. How is the Polarity of the Magnets? Are they Bi-Polar?

Some products contain magnets that are facing the wrong way (the south or positive polarity is facing the body), which can increase, rather than ease discomfort. There are also products with bipolar (both poles on the same side) magnets. Bipolar magnets are not recommended and may also increase discomfort. For your safety and comfort, you should use products with monopolar, permanent magnets with their north-pole facing the body.

3. What material is the Magnet made of?

Depending on the material the magnets are made of, they might loose their magnetic powers over time, sometimes as fast as within a few months. Neodymium are by far the strongest magnets with highest resistance against demagnetization (only 1% in 100 years).
